Trade & Marketing
Canada’s grain sector has enormous potential within the global market.
We export nearly 80 per cent of the grain we grow, and access to international markets directly impacts Canadian farmers’ profitability. For this reason, growth and diversification are of paramount consideration.
Canada’s agriculture is facing unprecedented challenges in the international marketplace. Nationalism and protections have impacted our sector, with more than 90 governments around the world introducing over 200 import and export restrictions that have affected trade. Unfettered and predictable two-way trade and diversity of markets are the best protection against supply shortfalls, natural disasters, diseases and price shocks.
Over the next thirty years, global demand will continue to grow rapidly. As the fifth largest agri-food exporter, we are well-positioned to strengthen existing trade relationships while building new ones in burgeoning markets. Strict, multilateral rules of trade and trade agreements are necessary to provide predictability in markets.
